
Katie Hardersen King is a partner at Wake Family Law Group. She is a board-certified family law specialist with over two decades of experience serving families across North Carolina. Katie is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, a distinction reserved for the nation’s most accomplished family law attorneys. She has earned an AV-Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell, the highest possible peer rating for professional excellence and ethical standards.
Katie advises clients in complex family law matters, bringing a practical and thoughtful approach to issues that are both legally complicated and deeply personal. She also maintains a focused assisted reproductive technology (ART) practice, representing gestational carriers and donors in negotiating agreements and related legal matters.
In addition to representing clients, Katie has extensive experience helping families resolve disputes outside of traditional litigation. She is certified as a Family Financial Mediator by the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission and as an arbitrator by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. She has also served as a Parenting Coordinator in high conflict custody matters since 2008.
Katie earned her J.D. from Campbell University School of Law in 2002, where she served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Campbell Law Observer. She received her B.A. in English and Political Studies from Meredith College in 1999. She was admitted to the North Carolina State Bar in 2002.
Katie is a Past Chair of the Family Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA), a group with membership of over 1400 family law attorneys state wide. She has also served as a Council Member and Secretary of the Section and continues to contribute through her work on the Adoption and Modern Family Committees and as the leader of the Grandparent Custody and Visitation Task Force. Katie is a longtime member of the Wake County Bar Association and previously served on its Board of Directors.
Katie has also served the legal profession in roles focused on attorney ethics and professional responsibility. She previously served as Chair of the Tenth Judicial District’s Grievance Committee, which investigates attorney misconduct. She currently serves on the North Carolina State Bar’s Disciplinary Hearing Commission (DHC), a tribunal that hears all contested disciplinary cases involving North Carolina attorneys.
Katie is also an ally attorney member of the LGBT Family Law Institute, a national group of family law professionals with expertise in representing members of the LGBTQ+ community with sensitivity and skill.
Outside of her law practice, Katie remains active in the community. She has served on the boards of Wake County Smart Start and the Raleigh Professional Women’s Forum and is the family law liaison for HOPE Court, a federal post-conviction treatment program for post-conviction individuals working through substance use and recovery. She and her family are also involved in the animal rescue community and have fostered and adopted numerous animals over the years.
Katie served as a chapter editor for the publications, North Carolina Family Law Case Book with Critical Cases and North Carolina Family Law Marital Claims Deskbook (fourth and fifth editions). She has been recognized by North Carolina Super Lawyers as a “Super Lawyer” in family law each year since 2020 and was previously recognized as a “Rising Star” in Family Law from 2012-2016. She has also been included in Business North Carolina magazine’s “Legal Elite” many times, including mostly recently for 2026. Katie frequently speaks statewide on family law and legal ethics.
